Given the significance of Kaiyukan,
it’s essential to know the key attractions!

This time, we’ll provide a thorough introduction to the charm of Kaiyukan!

Learn About the Concept of Kaiyukan

「All life on Earth interacts as one living organism.」

All creatures on Earth live interconnected lives, which aligns with the “Ring of Fire” and the “Ring of Life” around the Pacific Ocean.

Therefore, Kaiyukan’s exhibition theme is the “recreation of the natural environment surrounding the Pacific Ocean,” allowing visitors to experience a journey through life from the top floor on the 8th floor… such is the nature of this aquarium.

Attraction 1: Whale Sharks Gracefully Swimming in a Giant Tank

Kaiyukan is famously known for its whale sharks!

These creatures, the largest fish species, are part of the shark family. They have distinctive spot patterns on their backs, resembling a Jinbei jacket, which is why they are called whale sharks. They can grow up to 10-12 meters, making them the largest fish in the world.

The whale shark resides in the massive “Pacific Ocean” tank, which spans from the 6th to the 4th floor. Visitors can observe it from various angles while descending a slope, a unique feature of Kaiyukan.

In addition to whale sharks, the tank hosts a variety of other marine life, from small fish to large rays like manta rays.

Attraction 2: The Adorable Ringed Seals

In the “Arctic” tank, you’ll find the adorable ringed seals. Currently, Kaiyukan is home to three of these seals, affectionately known as the “Ringed Trio.” They are the smallest species in the seal family, named for their ring-like spot patterns. They live in icy environments, where they dig holes in the ice for nesting and raising their young.

These seals are sensitive to environmental changes, but Kaiyukan has successfully achieved complete artificial rearing of ringed seals for the first time in Japan. A seal named Mizore, raised this way, now lives healthily in a Hokkaido aquarium.

The tank where the ringed seals live has recently been renovated, so you can now see the Ringed Trio again! Be sure to visit and enjoy their cuteness at Kaiyukan.

Attraction 3: The Photogenic Space, “Jellyfish Galaxy”

The “Jellyfish Galaxy” offers a magical experience. In this dark space, illuminated jellyfish swim gracefully. The transparent jellyfish create an otherworldly atmosphere, making you feel as though you’re in a galaxy.

Various jellyfish species swim in the tanks, each creating a different ambiance. Their slow movements make them popular photo subjects, making this one of the top photo spots in Kaiyukan. Capture stunning, dreamlike photos for yourself!

Attraction 4: Cute and Unique Animals Living Near the Water

Kaiyukan features not only marine life but also animals that live near water! You can observe adorable and unique animals like the Asian small-clawed otter, the coati, capybaras, and penguins.

Especially popular are the Asian small-clawed otters in the “Japan Forest” tank. These carnivorous animals belong to the weasel family and are named for their small claws. They are the smallest otter species and are active, making them irresistibly cute. Four baby otters were born in August 2023, drawing media attention.

Besides the otters, there are many other charming and unique animals to discover, so be sure to look for them!

Attraction 5: Feeding Times for Kaiyukan’s Residents

At Kaiyukan, you can watch the feeding times of various animals! You can witness the impressive sight of them being fed and trained for health checks up close.

The whale shark feeding time is a highlight, where you can see the sharks swimming upright to eat, a rare sight. Check the schedule and make sure to watch it!

Tickets to view the whale shark feeding from the backstage are also available for those interested in a different perspective. However, it may be canceled, so check Kaiyukan’s official website for details.

Attraction 6: Cute and Delicious Food and Souvenirs

Kaiyukan offers adorable food themed around whale sharks and penguins!

At “cafe R.O.F” on the 4th floor, you can enjoy whale shark-themed soft serve ice cream and latte art featuring cute whale sharks! There are also long hot dogs inspired by garden eels, perfect for a snack while exploring. Some seats offer a view of the Japan Trench tank, providing a relaxing atmosphere.

On the 2nd floor of the entrance building, “Drink Stand SEA SAW” offers a limited-edition whale shark bento. While there are no dedicated seats, benches nearby are available for dining.
