Let’s start by learning about orcas (killer whales)!
As of December 2024, Kobe Suma Sea World is the only aquarium in Western Japan exhibiting orcas (killer whales). In Japan, only Kobe Suma Sea World, Kamogawa Sea World, and Nagoya Port Aquarium have orcas on display.
A few years ago, orcas were also kept at Adventure World in Wakayama and the Kujira Museum in Daichi Town, but after their departure, it has been impossible to see them in Western Japan. This makes the arrival of orcas at Kobe Suma Sea World an exciting event for many!
Now, let’s learn about orcas (killer whales) and what makes them so fascinating!
The orca, also known as the killer whale, is often referred to as the “strongest hunter in the sea.”
The name “shachi” is the Japanese term for orcas, while “orca” comes from the Latin Orcinus orca, meaning “demon from the underworld.” This name likely originates from the perception of orcas as a formidable presence in the wild. Known as the “strongest hunters of the sea,” orcas sit at the top of the oceanic food chain with no natural predators. They are highly social creatures, living in pods and cooperating to hunt, which is one of their notable traits.
Orcas typically measure around 7 meters in length, but larger individuals can grow up to 9.8 meters long and weigh about 10 tons. Their dorsal fins alone can reach up to 2 meters in height. Despite their massive size, orcas are surprisingly fast swimmers, reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km/h—comparable to a car’s speed. Their intelligence is extraordinary, as they use complex teamwork during hunts, and in some cases, even tools.
However, despite being called the “demon from the underworld” and the “strongest hunter in the sea,” orcas have an unexpectedly cute and endearing appearance. They are known for their rich emotional expressions, and the orcas at Kobe Suma Sea World delight visitors with dynamic shows, playful behaviors, and interactions with their trainers, offering a glimpse into their charming personalities.
