Osaka’s Iconic Landmark!

What is Tsutenkaku?

Tsutenkaku was originally built in 1903 as a symbol for the Luna Park amusement area, which was part of the 5th National Industrial Exhibition. Its design was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, and it was the tallest structure in the East at the time, standing about 75 meters tall. The name “Tsutenkaku” means “tower reaching the heavens.”

The original tower was destroyed in 1943 due to a nearby fire, but it was rebuilt in 1956. The current tower, designed by Tachū Naitō, was completed in 1956. It was registered as a tangible cultural property in 2007 and has been continuously evolving since then.

The Fortunate God “Billiken”

When it comes to Tsutenkaku, you can’t forget “Billiken.” This smiling character is a beloved symbol of Tsutenkaku.

The charming Billiken actually originated in the United States. Created by American illustrator Florence Pretz in 1908, Billiken was modeled after a “god seen in a dream.” This lucky mascot, which was popular worldwide at the time, made its way to Osaka’s Shinsekai and continues to be a beloved icon of Tsutenkaku.

The current Billiken at Tsutenkaku is the third generation and remains cherished just like the original. It is believed that rubbing Billiken’s feet brings good fortune, and many visitors make sure to do so when they visit Tsutenkaku. Don’t forget to rub Billiken’s feet and make a wish when you’re there!

The Evolving Tsutenkaku

The original Tsutenkaku was designed to connect with Luna Park via a red cable car, allowing visitors to enjoy aerial views as they approached the park entrance.

The current second-generation Tsutenkaku was newly built as an observation tower! It has transformed into an observation deck offering panoramic views of Osaka, and it continues to evolve year after year!

Special Outdoor Observation Deck “Tenbou Paradise” and the Cantilever Observation Deck “TIP THE TSUTENKAKU” (Top)

The special outdoor observation deck “Tenbou Paradise” at the top of Tsutenkaku is located 94.5 meters above ground. It offers a unique space to fully enjoy the view of Osaka. Being outdoors, it provides an unobstructed view and a chance to feel the seasonal breezes.

The cantilever observation deck “TIP THE TSUTENKAKU” at 92.5 meters above ground features a transparent floor at the edge, allowing you to experience a thrilling sensation as if floating in mid-air!

Golden Observation Deck (5th Floor)

The Golden Observation Deck, located 87.5 meters above ground, is decorated to rival the golden tea rooms of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The third-generation golden Billiken statue is enshrined here. Be sure to rub Billiken’s feet for good luck!

Light Observation Deck (4th Floor)

At night, the Light Observation Deck, located 84 meters above ground, transforms with flashy lights and a disco ball, creating a vibrant atmosphere. During the day, it plays subdued music, but by the afternoon, the music becomes upbeat, turning the space into a nostalgic disco-like environment!

Top Floor (3rd Floor)

The Top Floor features a diorama and videos depicting the state of Shinsekai from about 100 years ago, along with valuable historical photos. It’s a space to learn about the history of Tsutenkaku.

New Experience Attraction “TOWER SLIDER” (3rd Floor → Underground 1st Floor)

The “TOWER SLIDER,” newly established in 2022, is a popular experience where you slide down a 60-meter long slide at a 30-degree angle from the 3rd floor around the elevator shaft. It’s a thrilling ride with a unique view of Tsutenkaku!

Under Floor (2nd Floor)

The Under Floor features Billiken merchandise and souvenirs. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs from Tsutenkaku. There’s also a special corner dedicated to the “Kinnikuman Project Archive” to support the revitalization of Shinsekai.

Reproduction of the Great Ceiling Painting (1st Floor)

Before entering the observation deck, you’ll see a reproduction of the Great Ceiling Painting from the original Tsutenkaku. The painting, featuring three peacocks in Hanazono, is illuminated at night for a different viewing experience.

Waku Waku Land (Underground 1st Floor)

This area gathers antenna shops from famous food manufacturers such as Morinaga’s “Kyorochan’s Sweet Shop,” Ezaki Glico’s “Glico-ya,” and Nissin Foods’ “Chicken Ramen Hiyoko-chan SHOP.” Each shop offers exclusive products and merchandise perfect for souvenirs. There are also character statues and photo spots, making it ideal for memorable photos!

Night Views of Tsutenkaku

After enjoying Tsutenkaku, the night views are also worth checking out! The tower is illuminated from sunset until 11 PM, offering beautiful neon lights. Consider strolling around Shinsekai and enjoying the night views.

Since the 2022 major renovation, an LED vision has been installed, displaying various advertisements including content related to the 2025 World Expo. Don’t miss the chance to see it!

Additionally, viewing Tsutenkaku from Abeno Harukas in Tennoji offers a different perspective. You might want to visit Tennoji, just one station from Shin-Imamiya, to see Tsutenkaku from a new angle.
