Osaka’s Traditional Confectionery: Namiyoshian

Osaka’s Traditional Confectionery: Namiyoshian

Osaka is home to many long-established traditional confectionery shops, and one that’s currently gaining attention is Namiyoshian.

They offer a wide variety of delicious Japanese sweets, including their popular “Aburi Mitarashi” (grilled rice dumplings in a sweet soy sauce glaze), “Mitarashi Torotoro” (a gooey mitarashi sweet available for online purchase), dorayaki (sweet red bean pancakes), warabi mochi (bracken starch dumplings), and more.

There’s also a café where you can enjoy freshly made “Aburi Mitarashi”, making it a popular destination for both children and adults!

This time, we’ll be introducing the main store of this long-established confectionery shop Namiyoshian, located in the Okunamba area of Osaka.

A Long-established Confectionery Shop in the Okunamba Area

**Namiyoshian**, with a history of over 160 years, is located in the “Okunamba” area, within walking distance from Namba and Daikokucho in Osaka. While you might wonder, “Is there really a shop here?” it’s actually nestled in a surprising location.

However, if you follow the access information carefully, you’ll soon spot the grand gate of this impressive residence, making it easy to find! The exterior exudes the charm of a traditional Japanese house, fitting for a long-established confectionery shop, while the attached café has a stylish Japanese vibe.

A Must-try: “Aburi Mitarashi”

Namiyoshian’s **Aburi Mitarashi** is one of their most popular items! These grilled rice dumplings made with domestic rice flour are generously covered in a delicious mitarashi sauce.

Aburi Mitarashi is a fresh confection available only at the direct stores, and it’s prepared to order, allowing you to enjoy it at its freshest!

Especially popular is the Aburi Mitarashi set, which is served in a jar. The set includes Aburi Mitarashi, vanilla ice cream, and a drink.

Because it’s served in its best state, the set is highly popular, and reservations are a must. You can make a reservation through the official website, so be sure to book and try it out!

Bread at a Confectionery Shop? Spotlight on Namiyoshian’s Bread

Namiyoshian isn’t just about Japanese sweets—they also sell bread! Last year, they opened a bread section, offering breads that incorporate traditional Japanese confectionery ingredients.

While there aren’t many varieties, you can find items like dashimaki tamago sandwiches, mochi bread, mochi an donuts, and even shokupan (Japanese milk bread). Many people enjoy a leisurely time at the café and then buy some bread to take home!

However, since the bread is limited in quantity, we recommend visiting early if you want to buy some. The bread section’s hours are listed on the official website, so be sure to check it out.

Take Home Some Japanese Sweets as Souvenirs!

As a long-established confectionery shop, of course, you can also take home some of their sweets! Their popular Aburi Mitarashi can be taken away, making it a perfect souvenir for family and friends.

They carefully package the items, so there’s no need to worry about spills.

We also recommend their Mitarashi Torotoro, a popular mail-order item, if you want to take home a bit of Namiyoshian! This soft mochi is filled with a special mitarashi sauce, and the packaging is adorably designed, making it a great gift.

Other delicious options include dorayaki and warabi mochi, so be sure to choose your favorite Japanese sweets.

Additionally, they offer seasonal sweets, so it might be worth visiting again as the seasons change.
